Formula

D = 1 − V_mpp / V_oc

Description

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers use DC-DC converters to operate the solar panel at its optimal voltage regardless of battery or load voltage. The duty cycle of the buck converter stage determines the voltage conversion ratio. The maximum power point voltage (V_mpp) is typically 70-80% of the open circuit voltage (V_oc) for crystalline silicon panels. This relationship provides a simple estimate for the initial duty cycle, which the MPPT algorithm then refines through perturb-and-observe or incremental conductance methods.

Variables

  • D — Buck converter duty cycle (0-1)
  • V_mpp — Panel voltage at maximum power point (V)
  • V_oc — Panel open circuit voltage (V)

Practical Notes

The V_mpp/V_oc ratio varies with temperature and irradiance. At higher temperatures, V_oc drops faster than V_mpp, so the ratio increases slightly. Some MPPT controllers use a fractional V_oc method that periodically measures V_oc and sets V_mpp to approximately 76% of V_oc as a fast approximation.
